Professional Interests
I am a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Economics at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. I graduated from North Carolina State University with a B.S. in Applied Mathematics in 2004 with concentrations in Economics and Computer Science. My research interests lie in the intersection of industrial organization, econometrics, and computational economics. I enjoy thinking about ways to solve computationally difficult problems in applied microeconomics by applying tools from Mathematics and Computer Science.
Personal Interests
I am a strong advocate of free and open source software. Much of the information on this site is related to computer programming and the Linux operating system.
I enjoy being a city dweller. When I’m not working, you can most likely find me in a cafe having a cup of coffee or enjoying a craft beer somewhere. I’m a supporter of public transit and smart, walkable urban design. I also love urban photography, especially at night, and I like to try to capture the unpolished parts of the city and its infrastructure that lie behind the scenes.

When I can, I enjoy traveling, hiking, camping, canoeing, and skiing. From time to time I have taken up rock climbing, rafting, kayaking, and scuba diving. I used to play bass guitar, and a little acoustic guitar, but like so many other hobbies, the bass has been sitting on the stand for a while. Even though I don’t play that often, I still love listening to live music, especially good local and regional bands. I enjoy many kinds of music, but some of my favorite bands are Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Beck, Medeski Martin and Wood, Pearl Jam, and David Bowie.
My fiancée, Kelly, is working on her masters in Speech-Language Pathology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. You can see some of her pictures and read about our travels on her weblog
