I have been wondering whether or not to keep output (PDF) files under version control or not. This wikibook and the paper it’s based on convinced me not to. As long as the repository contains everything needed to build an exact copy of the output file, then it’s redundant. Unfortunately, that rules out using commands like
\today.-
